How to study for the Series 3 exam

Build Part 1 from contract mechanics to hedging and option calculations, then study Part 2 as a workflow: identify the regulated role, customer or account, required disclosure or control, and correct compliance response.

Core concepts

Concept 1

Registration depends on the activity and capacity performed; passing Series 3 alone does not authorize a person to conduct commodity business.

Exam cue: Identify the person's actual function before selecting FCM, IB, CPO, CTA, AP, floor broker, or floor trader status.

Concept 2

NFA Members must conduct futures business with required registered or exempt persons and supervise associates under written, risk-based procedures.

Exam cue: Separate exam proficiency from CFTC registration, NFA membership, sponsorship, and any activity-specific approval.

Concept 3

Just and equitable conduct prohibits cheating, deception, misuse of information, and practices inconsistent with customer protection.

Exam cue: When facts suggest misconduct, choose documented escalation and supervision rather than informal concealment.

Risk pitfalls and guardrails

Assuming Series 3 is a stand-alone license to solicit futures business.

Guardrail: Keep cash, futures, and option legs separate; do not confuse margin with exposure, disclosure with permission, or exam passage with registration.

Treating an unregistered intermediary as acceptable without verifying an exemption or permitted status.

Guardrail: Keep cash, futures, and option legs separate; do not confuse margin with exposure, disclosure with permission, or exam passage with registration.

Allowing a business title to override the regulatory definition of the activity performed.

Guardrail: Keep cash, futures, and option legs separate; do not confuse margin with exposure, disclosure with permission, or exam passage with registration.

Memory anchors

FCM

A futures commission merchant solicits or accepts commodity-interest orders and accepts customer money, securities, or property to margin or secure them.

IB

An introducing broker solicits or accepts orders but does not accept customer funds to margin or secure the trades.

CPO

A commodity pool operator operates or solicits funds for a pooled vehicle that trades commodity interests.

CTA

A commodity trading advisor provides compensated advice about commodity interests, subject to definitions and exemptions.

AP

An associated person solicits or supervises the solicitation of customers, discretionary accounts, or pool interests for a registrant.

Series 3 Is Proficiency

Passing Series 3 satisfies an exam requirement; registration and NFA requirements still must be completed.

Two-Year Principle

Series 3 proficiency generally must be recent or preserved through qualifying continuous registration, subject to current NFA rules.

Bylaw 1101

An NFA Member generally must conduct required commodity-interest business with persons properly registered and NFA Members or exempt.

Rule 2-4

NFA Compliance Rule 2-4 requires high standards of commercial honor and just and equitable principles of trade.

Supervision

NFA Compliance Rule 2-9 requires diligent supervision of employees and agents in commodity-interest activities.

Checkpoint rule

Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.
