How to study for Goethe-Zertifikat A1

Use the Goethe-Institut A1 structure as the map: build everyday German for short conversations, public announcements, notes, classifieds, forms, short personal texts, introductions, questions, and requests.

Core concepts

Concept 1

Writing Part 2 asks for a short personal message of about 30 words with one or two sentences for each of three content points.

Exam cue: Underline the three content points and assign at least one short sentence to each.

Concept 2

The message needs a recognizable text type, appropriate greeting and closing, and a clear purpose such as inviting, thanking, apologizing, asking, or informing.

Exam cue: State the message purpose early, then add exact time, place, reason, request, or alternative details.

Concept 3

Simple accurate sentences that complete the task are more valuable than extra unrelated language.

Exam cue: Check that greeting, du or Sie, possessives, request form, and closing use one consistent relationship.

Risk pitfalls and guardrails

Writing about the general topic while omitting one of the three required actions.

Guardrail: Do not choose by one repeated word or familiar number; match the whole audio, text, field label, writing point, or spoken interaction.

Giving a vague invitation, cancellation, or request without a usable time, place, reason, or next step.

Guardrail: Do not choose by one repeated word or familiar number; match the whole audio, text, field label, writing point, or spoken interaction.

Mixing an informal greeting with formal pronouns or ending without a text-appropriate closing.

Guardrail: Do not choose by one repeated word or familiar number; match the whole audio, text, field label, writing point, or spoken interaction.

Thank-you messages should identify what the writer appreciates.

Apology

Apology messages should state the problem and offer a simple fix.

Closing

A closing phrase should be natural and matched to the relationship.

Three Points

Plan one or two short sentences for each of the three content points before writing the message.

About 30 Words

Aim for a concise message around 30 words, but prioritize all content points, clarity, greeting, and closing.

Checkpoint rule

Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.
