Memory anchors
OAR
OAR predicts academic performance in Naval Officer Candidate School and is based on MST, RCT, and MCT.
AQR
AQR predicts academic performance in Aviation Preflight Indoctrination and primary ground school.
PFAR
PFAR predicts primary flight performance for Student Naval Aviators.
FOFAR
FOFAR predicts primary flight performance for Student Naval Flight Officers.
Score Range
NMOTC lists AQR, PFAR, and FOFAR as 1-to-9 stanines and OAR as 20 to 80.
Full Battery
Aviation applicants should take the entire ASTB-E battery; some non-aviation officer applicants may only need OAR.
Adaptive Testing
Computer adaptive testing changes item difficulty based on previous performance.
Balanced Prep
Balanced preparation covers math, reading, mechanics, aviation and nautical knowledge, PBM readiness, and test rules.
Six Subtests
The public NMOTC overview lists MST, RCT, MCT, ANIT, NATFI, and PBM in the full ASTB-E battery.
No Review
Computer-adaptive MST, RCT, MCT, ANIT, and NATFI items cannot be skipped, revisited, or changed after submission.
Completion and Guessing
Work steadily enough to complete adaptive sections, but do not sacrifice accuracy by randomly guessing through the remaining items.
Current Score of Record
After a retest, the most recent complete ASTB-E scores replace earlier scores even if the new results are lower.
Retest Rule
Series E permits three lifetime attempts with at least 30 full calendar days between attempts.
Program Minimums
Selection programs set their own minimums and may weigh OAR, AQR, PFAR, or FOFAR differently, so confirm current requirements with a recruiter.
