Assignment Research and Report
Integrate experimental and literature data into the externally marked 20-mark report under current controlled conditions.
How to study National 5 Physics
Move from a physical situation to a model, relationship, calculation and evidence-based conclusion, while using current official documents for exact assessment conditions.
Core concepts
Concept 1
The research must involve an experiment that generates measurements and comparative numerical or graphical data from an internet, book or journal source.
Exam cue: Choose a focused topic whose experiment can generate sufficient numerical data.
Concept 2
The report awards marks for title, aim, underlying physics, data handling, graphing, comparison, conclusion, evaluation and structure.
Exam cue: Record raw experimental data and the reference for comparative data before the report stage.
Concept 3
The whole assignment should take no more than eight hours, with a maximum 90-minute report stage under high supervision and prescribed-resource conditions.
Exam cue: Compare datasets explicitly and support the conclusion with all report evidence.
Risk pitfalls and guardrails
Bringing a prepared report draft or sample calculations into the controlled stage.
Guardrail: Use the current official task and centre controls; study notes do not permit a prepared report or prohibited material.
Providing literature explanation but no comparative numerical or graphical data.
Guardrail: Check the model, assumptions, prefixes, units, significant figures and whether every conclusion is supported by evidence.
Describing a generic error without linking it to reliability, accuracy or precision.
Guardrail: Check the model, assumptions, prefixes, units, significant figures and whether every conclusion is supported by evidence.
Memory anchors
Assignment raw mark
20 marks, scaled to 28.
Two stages
Research under some control; report under high control.
Time
No more than eight hours overall and 90 minutes for the report.
Two data sources
Experimental measurements and referenced comparative data.
Report spine
Title, aim, physics, data, graph, comparison, conclusion, evaluation, structure.
No draft
A previously prepared report or report section is not permitted.
Checkpoint rule
Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.
Knowledge Check (after reading)
Short check-up to confirm understanding of this module.
