Concept 1
GMDSS combines terrestrial and satellite systems so distress can reach rescue authorities and nearby equipped vessels and safety information can reach ships.
Exam cue: Choose sea area from the available alerting service, not from distance offshore alone.
Concept 2
Sea Area A1 is within radiotelephone coverage of at least one VHF coast station providing continuous DSC alerting; effective small-vessel coverage also depends on antenna height.
Exam cue: Allow for portable or low antenna height reducing practical VHF reach.
Concept 3
A2 is MF DSC coverage beyond A1, A3 is recognised geostationary satellite coverage beyond A1/A2, and A4 covers the remaining areas; SRC alone addresses the VHF A1 operating context.
Exam cue: Select equipment and operator qualification for the most demanding planned area.
