Core concepts
Concept 1
A bearing, transit, depth contour or other observed line constrains the vessel to a line of position; two or more suitably separated lines can produce a fix.
Exam cue: Choose charted objects that are distinct, visible and well separated in bearing.
Concept 2
Near-simultaneous observations, identifiable objects and a useful angle of cut improve a fix, while vessel movement and observation error reduce confidence.
Exam cue: Allow for the vessel's movement when observations cannot be simultaneous.
Concept 3
A fix should be tested against depth, visual appearance, GNSS or another independent source rather than accepted only because lines intersect.
Exam cue: Record time, method and confidence, then compare the result with the expected track and environment.
