Assessment, Certificate and Practical Boundary

What the public RYA material confirms about course assessment, what it does not publish, and how shorebased completion relates to practical and commercial routes.

How to prepare for Day Skipper Theory

Learn the navigation foundations first, combine tide and weather into berth-to-berth plans, then rehearse collision avoidance, electronic cross-checks, seamanship and emergency decisions.

Core concepts

Concept 1

The current public specification requires 40 learning hours plus exam time and recognised centres use current RYA assessment material, but public learner pages do not define one universal question count, paper duration, pass mark or question type.

Exam cue: Use the current recognised training centre's joining instructions for the exact assessment administration.

Concept 2

The shorebased assessment checks theoretical knowledge; practical sail or motor courses separately develop and assess preparation, boat handling, pilotage, passage making, crew leadership and emergency performance afloat.

Exam cue: Do not infer official paper structure from an independent provider's mock or legacy description.

Concept 3

For commercial endorsement, RYA requires a passed Day Skipper Shorebased course with an invigilated exam at an RYA recognised training centre plus the relevant Day Skipper practical certificate and other endorsement conditions.

Exam cue: Match the eventual practical certificate to sail or motor and verify commercial requirements separately.

Risk pitfalls and guardrails

Advertising an invented fixed number of questions, minutes or pass percentage as current RYA policy.

Guardrail: Do not present the 601-item authoring target as an official RYA paper and do not treat theory study as a substitute for recognised assessment or practical skippering competence.

Treating a shorebased course-completion certificate as proof of on-water competence.

Guardrail: Do not present the 601-item authoring target as an official RYA paper and do not treat theory study as a substitute for recognised assessment or practical skippering competence.

Assuming online delivery removes the invigilation requirement when the certificate will support commercial endorsement.

Guardrail: Do not present the 601-item authoring target as an official RYA paper and do not treat theory study as a substitute for recognised assessment or practical skippering competence.

Memory anchors

40 + Exam

Course learning time is 40 hours and assessment time is additional.

Public Numbers Not Published

No universal item count, paper duration or pass mark appears in current public learner guidance.

Theory Ashore

The shorebased assessment checks knowledge rather than practical command afloat.

Practical Endorsement

The separate practical certificate records sail or motor competence.

Commercial = Invigilated

Commercial endorsement requires the shorebased exam to be invigilated at an RYA recognised centre.

Checkpoint rule

Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.

Knowledge Check (after reading)

Short check-up to confirm understanding of this module.

Check-up Questions

1-2 question checkpoint

A centre advert lists 40 teaching hours. Which additional duration statement is supported by RYA's current learner page?

Does RYA publicly specify one universal Day Skipper Theory question count?
