How to prepare for a Boatmasters' Licence
Use the actual area, vessel and operation to select the route, build Annex 8 or 9 underpinning knowledge, complete the required records and training, and rehearse practical handling on the relevant vessel.
Core concepts
Concept 1
All BML candidates must be examined in the theoretical knowledge supporting practical skills, either by MCA or an approved body.
Exam cue: Explain the reason for an action, then demonstrate it safely on the relevant vessel.
Concept 2
Relevant Maritime Studies Qualification units can replace the MCA oral assessment, but every BML candidate must still satisfy practical seamanship and vessel-handling competence.

Concept 3
The examiner uses the Work Record and Training Record Book, may question recorded or incomplete tasks, and scopes Tier 2 to the proposed area and operation.
