Application Evidence, Medical Fitness and Validity
Minimum-age and service evidence, work and training records, ancillary safety training, medical certification, assessment and five-year validity.
How to prepare for a Boatmasters' Licence
Use the actual area, vessel and operation to select the route, build Annex 8 or 9 underpinning knowledge, complete the required records and training, and rehearse practical handling on the relevant vessel.
Core concepts
Concept 1
Application requires the correct age, qualifying experience, Work Record, completed relevant Training Record Book tasks, safety training and accepted medical evidence.
Exam cue: Match every document to the route, area, vessel and operation requested.
Concept 2
Tier 1 has prescribed qualifying service; Tier 2 uses sufficient relevant experience with Annex 6 figures as guidance rather than a fixed statutory QST.
Exam cue: Treat signatures and independent service testimonials as evidence, not paperwork to reconstruct later.
Concept 3
A BML is valid for a maximum of five years, while medical evidence can have a different validity period and must remain current.
Exam cue: Check current medical guidance and report health deterioration promptly.
Risk pitfalls and guardrails
Assuming completion of study alone qualifies an applicant.
Guardrail: Do not treat the aggregate 601-item study allocation as an official MCA paper or assume knowledge study replaces service, records, medical fitness, safety training or practical handling.
Self-certifying service or presenting experience unrelated to the requested operation.
Guardrail: Do not treat the aggregate 601-item study allocation as an official MCA paper or assume knowledge study replaces service, records, medical fitness, safety training or practical handling.
Treating the five-year licence as proof the medical certificate is still valid.
Guardrail: Do not treat the aggregate 601-item study allocation as an official MCA paper or assume knowledge study replaces service, records, medical fitness, safety training or practical handling.
