Concept 1
External loads create internal stresses such as tension, compression, bending, torsion and shear; the same component may experience more than one.
Exam cue: Draw or describe the load direction, support and likely deformation before naming a stress.

Structural performance depends on material, cross-section, span, joints, load direction and distribution rather than material strength alone.
Exam cue: Explain why a structural feature changes the load path or second moment effect in GCSE-appropriate terms.

Memory anchors
Tension

Twisting caused by a turning effect about an axis.
