Concept 1
Reaction rate can be measured as reactant used or product formed per unit time using mass, gas volume, colour, turbidity or another suitable observable.
Exam cue: Choose a measurement that changes reliably with reaction progress and can be recorded safely.
Concept 2
Mean rate uses total change divided by time, while instantaneous rate is the gradient of a tangent at a specified point.
Exam cue: Use axis units and distinguish a secant mean from a tangent instantaneous rate.
Concept 3
A valid rate investigation controls other rate factors, uses an appropriate measurement interval and considers repeatability and uncertainty.
Exam cue: Explain plateaus through exhaustion of a reactant rather than saying the rate has accumulated.

Memory anchors
Mean rate
Total change in reactant or product ÷ elapsed time.
Instantaneous rate
The gradient of a tangent at the chosen time.
Rate curve slope
A steeper slope represents a faster reaction at that time.
Plateau
No further measured change because the limiting reactant has been exhausted.
Fair rate test
Change one rate factor and control the others.
