Hazard Response Timing and Scoring
The DVA ADI hazard-perception format, early valid response, evolving situations and avoidance of indiscriminate clicking.
How to study for DVA ADI Part 1
Keep Northern Ireland law and DVA process separate from generic driving technique, then link each rule to observation, risk control and a clear teaching response.
Core concepts
Concept 1
DVA uses 14 CGI clips with 15 scoring hazards and awards up to five points for each developing hazard.
Exam cue: Respond when a visible clue shows that driver action may now be needed.
Concept 2
The scoring opportunity begins when the hazard is developing, so recognition should be prompt but evidence-based.
Exam cue: If the situation genuinely changes again, a further response may be appropriate.
Concept 3
Repeated indiscriminate clicking can produce a zero score for the clip.
Exam cue: Practise observation and anticipation rather than a memorised clicking rhythm.
Risk pitfalls and guardrails
Clicking on a hazard before any development clue exists.
Guardrail: Written questions can teach recognition logic but cannot reproduce the official clip timing or scoring window.
Waiting for the hazard to block the path completely.
Guardrail: Written questions can teach recognition logic but cannot reproduce the official clip timing or scoring window.
Clicking continuously in the hope of entering the scoring window.
Guardrail: Written questions can teach recognition logic but cannot reproduce the official clip timing or scoring window.
Memory anchors
DVA ADI Clips
The current DVA guide describes 14 CGI clips containing 15 scoring hazards.
Maximum Score
Each scoring hazard offers up to five points, for a maximum of 75.
Pass Mark
The current DVA ADI guide states a hazard-perception pass mark of 57 out of 75.
Early Valid Response
Respond as soon as a clue shows that the hazard is developing and may require action.
Changing Situation
A genuine further development may justify another response as the risk changes.
Clicking Pattern
Indiscriminate repeated clicking can invalidate the clip score.
Checkpoint rule
Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.
Knowledge Check (after reading)
Short check-up to confirm understanding of this module.
Check-up Questions
What visual format does DVA use for the ADI Part 1 hazard-perception component?
