Core concepts
Concept 1
Ray diagrams use predictable rays through or towards a focal point to locate an image.
Exam cue: Confirm the CCEA unit, tier and whether the task tests a model, calculation, explanation or practical judgement.
Concept 2
Real images form where rays converge and can be projected; virtual images form where rays only appear to originate.
Exam cue: Use at least two accurate principal rays, extend rays behind the lens only for a virtual image and describe size, orientation and type.
Concept 3
Magnification compares image size with object size and has no unit when both use the same unit.
Exam cue: Show substitutions and units, connect evidence to the physical model and limit the conclusion to the stated conditions.
Risk pitfalls and guardrails
Drawing rays that bend at the focal point instead of at the lens or claiming a virtual image can be projected.
Guardrail: Do not import an England board, Single Award or Double Award structure, and do not replace a causal physical explanation with an equation alone.
Importing an equation sheet, Higher-only boundary or paper convention from an England 9-1 board.
Guardrail: Use the current CCEA formatting to confirm Higher-only content and the correct paper duration; do not infer tier scope from another exam board.

Diverging lens

Principal focus
The point where parallel rays converge or appear to diverge from.
Real image
An image formed by actual ray convergence and projectable on a screen.
Virtual image
An image formed by apparent ray origins and not projectable.
Magnification
Image size divided by object size.
