Concept 1
Atomic number counts protons, mass number counts protons plus neutrons, and isotopes share proton number but differ in neutron number.
Exam cue: Confirm the CCEA unit, tier and whether the task tests a model, calculation, explanation or practical judgement.
Concept 2
Unstable nuclei decay spontaneously and randomly, emitting alpha, beta or gamma radiation with distinct structures and penetration.
Exam cue: Balance both nuclear numbers, distinguish emission from irradiation and subtract background count consistently with time.
Concept 3
Nuclear equations conserve mass number and atomic number, while measured source activity must be corrected for background.
Exam cue: Show substitutions and units, connect evidence to the physical model and limit the conclusion to the stated conditions.

Treating gamma radiation as a particle with mass number or saying an individual decay time can be predicted.
