Unit 3 Prescribed Practicals C1-C9
Hydrated crystals, acids, salts, ion tests, metal reactivity, rates, carboxylic acids, titration and common gases.
How to study for CCEA GCSE Chemistry
Connect particle models to observations, balance every quantitative relationship, and prepare each prescribed practical from safe method through analysis and evaluation.
Core concepts
Concept 1
Each prescribed practical connects a chemical question to a safe method, observable evidence and suitable quantitative processing.
Exam cue: For C1-C9, know purpose, apparatus, sequence, safety, observations, calculation and the main source of uncertainty.
Concept 2
Booklet A tasks are based on but not identical to the prescribed practicals, so transferable technique matters more than memorising one script.
Exam cue: Adapt the underlying technique when substances or quantities differ from the taught method.
Concept 3
Booklet B can test planning and carrying out any prescribed practical plus other practical contexts arising from Units 1 and 2.
Exam cue: Connect each procedural step to the evidence it protects or produces.
Risk pitfalls and guardrails
Memorising a method without knowing why a reagent, wash, heat, repeat or endpoint step is needed.
Guardrail: Do not import an England board, Single Award or Double Award structure, and do not replace a particle-level explanation with a vague observation.
Assuming the live Booklet A task will reproduce a prescribed practical exactly.
Guardrail: Written review cannot reproduce supervised laboratory performance or replace current CCEA pre-release and centre instructions.
Treating written review as a substitute for supervised laboratory practice and current centre instructions.
Guardrail: Do not import an England board, Single Award or Double Award structure, and do not replace a particle-level explanation with a vague observation.
Memory anchors
C1-C3
Hydrated-crystal water, acid reactions and soluble-salt preparation.
C4-C6
Ionic-compound tests, metal reactivity and rate-variable investigation.
C7-C9
Carboxylic-acid reactions, titration and hydrogen-oxygen-carbon-dioxide work.
Booklet A
Two pre-release practical tasks based on but not identical to C1-C9.
Booklet B
Written practical-context questions covering prescribed and wider Unit 1-2 situations.
Practical chain
Purpose, risk, variables, method, results, processing, conclusion and evaluation.
Checkpoint rule
Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.
Knowledge Check (after reading)
Short check-up to confirm understanding of this module.
Check-up Questions
C1: Why weigh the empty crucible before adding hydrated salt?
C1: Why heat, cool and reweigh a hydrated salt repeatedly?
Answer all questions to submit.
