SOPs, Teamwork, Stress and Fatigue
Standard operating procedures, checklists, briefings, communication, stressors, fatigue types and practical management.
How to prepare for the CAA GVC
Start with the current certificate and authorisation boundary, work through the five official subjects, then apply the material to mission planning, abnormal procedures and post-flight records with your approved RAE(PC).
Core concepts
Concept 1
SOPs and checklists reduce omission and variation, while a briefing builds a shared plan for roles, communications, hazards and abnormal responses.
Exam cue: Use the current checklist and still verify that the result makes operational sense.
Concept 2
Effective team communication is specific, acknowledged and closed-loop where needed, especially for changes in people, airspace, weather or aircraft condition.
Exam cue: Brief who will say what, how it will be acknowledged and which call requires an immediate response.
Concept 3
Stress is a natural response and fatigue may be short-term or chronic; both can impair performance, so immediate controls and longer-term recovery must be distinguished.
Exam cue: Reduce workload or stop rather than trying to overcome fatigue through effort alone.
Risk pitfalls and guardrails
Reciting a checklist without checking the aircraft or environment.
Guardrail: Do not treat a GVC, provider procedure, automation feature or Operational Authorisation maximum as permission to ignore current airspace, aircraft, weather, people or operator-specific conditions.
Assuming silence from a crew member means agreement or understanding.
Guardrail: Do not treat a GVC, provider procedure, automation feature or Operational Authorisation maximum as permission to ignore current airspace, aircraft, weather, people or operator-specific conditions.
Using caffeine or urgency as a substitute for adequate rest and workload control.
Guardrail: Do not treat a GVC, provider procedure, automation feature or Operational Authorisation maximum as permission to ignore current airspace, aircraft, weather, people or operator-specific conditions.
Memory anchors
SOP
A standard operating procedure defines a repeatable approved way to conduct a task.
Checklist
A checklist protects critical steps but does not replace observation and judgment.
Brief
Share the plan, roles, hazards, calls, contingencies and stopping points.
Closed Loop
Send the message, receive acknowledgement and confirm the intended action.
Stress
Stress is a natural response whose effect depends on level, duration and available coping resources.
Fatigue
Short-term and chronic fatigue require workload control, rest and longer-term recovery.
Checkpoint rule
Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.
Knowledge Check (after reading)
Short check-up to confirm understanding of this module.
