Practical Assessment Flight Cycle
Pre-flight inspection and set-up, take-off, abnormal conditions, safe shutdown, post-flight inspection and records.
How to prepare for the CAA GVC
Start with the current certificate and authorisation boundary, work through the five official subjects, then apply the material to mission planning, abnormal procedures and post-flight records with your approved RAE(PC).
Core concepts
Concept 1
The current GVC practical profile covers pre-flight mission planning and aircraft set-up, in-flight take-off and abnormal-condition procedures, and post-flight securing, inspection and recording.
Exam cue: Explain each safety-critical check and confirm the aircraft is configured for the intended operation.
Concept 2
The RAE(PC) defines its pass/fail criteria; the AMC guide uses cumulative minor and major errors and makes any single safety error an automatic failure.
Exam cue: Recognise the abnormal cue, maintain control, apply the practised procedure and communicate the decision.
Concept 3
Checklist use, clear calls, controlled aircraft handling and an early conservative response matter more than continuing a plan after safety margins have been lost.
Exam cue: After landing, disarm and make safe before inspection, defect decisions and log entries.
Risk pitfalls and guardrails
Memorising manoeuvres while neglecting mission, airspace or site-risk decisions.
Guardrail: Do not treat a GVC, provider procedure, automation feature or Operational Authorisation maximum as permission to ignore current airspace, aircraft, weather, people or operator-specific conditions.
Continuing after a safety-critical cue in order to finish the exercise.
Guardrail: Do not treat a GVC, provider procedure, automation feature or Operational Authorisation maximum as permission to ignore current airspace, aircraft, weather, people or operator-specific conditions.
Ending the assessment at touchdown without securing, inspecting and recording the aircraft.
Guardrail: Do not treat a GVC, provider procedure, automation feature or Operational Authorisation maximum as permission to ignore current airspace, aircraft, weather, people or operator-specific conditions.
Memory anchors
Pre-Flight
Plan, inspect, configure and brief before take-off.
Take-Off
Use the approved area and procedure while confirming stable control.
Abnormal
Maintain control, identify the cue, apply the procedure and communicate.
Safety Error
Under the AMC guide, one safety error produces an automatic practical failure.
Make Safe
After landing, shut down, disarm and secure the UAS before handling.
Post-Flight
Inspect condition and record defects, flight data and relevant occurrences.
Checkpoint rule
Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.
Knowledge Check (after reading)
Short check-up to confirm understanding of this module.
