How to prepare for the CAA A2 CofC
Learn the applicable aircraft route first, then connect weather and performance limits to site planning, separation, practical drills and safe operational decisions.
Core concepts
Concept 1
The current pathway requires the Open-category online training and examination that produces a Flyer ID, followed by self-practical training, declaration and the additional A2 theory examination.
Exam cue: Keep the Flyer ID test separate from the additional A2 CofC test.
Concept 2
The additional test is completed through a CAA-approved RAE, is closed book, lasts 75 minutes and contains at least 30 multiple-choice questions with a pass mark of at least 75%.
Exam cue: Read 'at least 30 questions' and 'at least 75%' literally rather than converting them into a provider-independent fixed paper.
Concept 3
The CAA overview states no minimum age, VLOS operations and five-year validity; the certificate does not replace any required Operator ID, airspace permission or operational authorisation.
Exam cue: Check that the provider appears on the current CAA RAE list before relying on its course or certificate.
Risk pitfalls and guardrails
Assuming a Flyer ID alone gives Near People (A2) privileges.
