Practical Self-Training and Abnormal Events
Representative-aircraft practice, normal and abnormal exercises, flight logging, debriefing and occurrence reporting.
How to prepare for the CAA A2 CofC
Learn the applicable aircraft route first, then connect weather and performance limits to site planning, separation, practical drills and safe operational decisions.
Core concepts
Concept 1
Self-practical training must precede the additional test and declaration; the current AMC specifies a representative UAS with comparable flight characteristics, control scheme and weight, using a UK2 class-marked aircraft with MTOM below 4 kg.
Exam cue: Match the practice aircraft and control modes to the aircraft and functions intended for use.
Concept 2
Practice covers preparation, normal manoeuvres, automated and manual functions where fitted, abnormal situations, loss of C2 link and safe response to incursions.
Exam cue: Practise abnormal and recovery procedures before relying on them near people.
Concept 3
The remote pilot should log the training, review each operation and identify when an occurrence report and investigation are required.
Exam cue: After an event, preserve facts, review the response and use the applicable reporting process rather than hiding a near miss.
Risk pitfalls and guardrails
Practising only take-off and landing while skipping abnormal conditions.
Guardrail: Do not treat a certificate, automated function or minimum distance as permission to ignore current class, airspace, weather, performance or overflight restrictions.
Declaring self-training without the flight-log evidence required by the current AMC.
Guardrail: Do not treat a certificate, automated function or minimum distance as permission to ignore current class, airspace, weather, performance or overflight restrictions.
Treating a recovered fly-away or serious near miss as irrelevant because nobody was injured.
Guardrail: Do not treat a certificate, automated function or minimum distance as permission to ignore current class, airspace, weather, performance or overflight restrictions.
Memory anchors
Representative Practice
Use comparable flight characteristics, controls and weight for the operation you intend to conduct.
Normal Exercises
Practise launch, stable manoeuvres, orientation, route following, return and landing or recovery.
Abnormal Exercises
Practise positioning problems, incursions, unsafe automation, C2-link loss and other manual-defined responses.
Flight Log
Record the self-practical training so the completion declaration is supported by evidence.
Debrief
Review what happened, what changed and what must be corrected before the next operation.
Occurrence Reporting
Recognise reportable events, preserve accurate information and use the applicable reporting channel.
Checkpoint rule
Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.
Knowledge Check (after reading)
Short check-up to confirm understanding of this module.
