Human Factors, Fitness, Pressure and Fatigue
Medical fitness, alcohol, drugs, medication, fatigue, workload, customer pressure, outdoor exposure and lone working.
How to prepare for the CAA A2 CofC
Learn the applicable aircraft route first, then connect weather and performance limits to site planning, separation, practical drills and safe operational decisions.
Core concepts
Concept 1
The remote pilot must be fit to perform the task and must consider illness, medication, alcohol, drugs, stress, fatigue and environmental exposure before and during flight.
Exam cue: Ask whether the condition or substance could impair perception, judgment, reaction or coordination.
Concept 2
Long flight duration, high workload, glare, cold, heat and lone working can reduce attention and decision quality even when the aircraft remains serviceable.
Exam cue: When pressure conflicts with a legal or safety limit, choose the limit and document the operational decision.
Concept 3
Commercial or customer pressure does not justify exceeding limits; a safe decision includes delaying, changing or cancelling the flight.
Exam cue: For lone working, plan communication, emergency support and a manageable workload before launch.
Risk pitfalls and guardrails
Assuming non-prescription medication cannot impair performance.
Guardrail: Do not treat a certificate, automated function or minimum distance as permission to ignore current class, airspace, weather, performance or overflight restrictions.
Continuing because a customer says the mission is urgent.
Guardrail: Do not treat a certificate, automated function or minimum distance as permission to ignore current class, airspace, weather, performance or overflight restrictions.
Treating fatigue as relevant only after a very long flight.
Guardrail: Do not treat a certificate, automated function or minimum distance as permission to ignore current class, airspace, weather, performance or overflight restrictions.
Memory anchors
Fitness to Fly
Do not operate when illness, stress or another condition could impair safe performance.
Medication
Check side effects and restrictions for prescription and non-prescription medicines.
Alcohol and Drugs
Never operate while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
Fatigue
Fatigue can reduce attention, reaction, judgment and reliable visual scanning.
Customer Pressure
Commercial urgency never overrides weather, aircraft, separation or legal limits.
Lone Working
Plan workload, communication and emergency support when no crew member is present.
Checkpoint rule
Do the check-up only after you can summarize each concept in one sentence and identify one dangerous pitfall from memory.
Knowledge Check (after reading)
Short check-up to confirm understanding of this module.
Check-up Questions
A remote pilot slept poorly and struggles to concentrate. What is the safest decision?
A medicine label warns of drowsiness. What should the pilot do?
