How to study for DVSA ADI Part 1

Build instructor-level road knowledge, Great Britain legal accuracy and client-centred teaching judgement, then practise hazard timing with suitable visual material.

Core concepts

Concept 1

DVSA administers the Great Britain ADI register on behalf of the Secretary of State for Transport.

Exam cue: Identify whether the person is an applicant, trainee licence holder, registered ADI or unregistered accompanying driver.

Concept 2

Part 1 is the theory test and currently has unlimited attempts; Parts 2 and 3 each have attempt limits within the qualification window.

Exam cue: Keep Part 1 attempts separate from the limits applying to Parts 2 and 3.

Concept 3

The Part 1 pass certificate number lasts two years, and the candidate must complete the qualifying process within that period or restart.

Exam cue: Use the current DVSA register guide and Great Britain legislation rather than Northern Ireland process rules.

Concept 4

Paid car driving instruction requires entry on the ADI register or a valid trainee driving instructor licence.

Concept 5

Registered instructors must remain fit and proper, display the required badge or licence and meet current notification and renewal duties.

Risk pitfalls and guardrails

Applying the Northern Ireland three-attempt rule to DVSA Part 1.

Guardrail: This slug is DVSA Great Britain only; do not import DVA administration or Northern Ireland law.

Assuming passing Part 1 permits charging for lessons.

Guardrail: Do not treat priority, a signal, a speed limit or a planned lesson as permission to ignore a changing risk.

Confusing the two-year qualification window with the four-year ADI registration period.

Guardrail: Do not treat priority, a signal, a speed limit or a planned lesson as permission to ignore a changing risk.
